BLACK FLAG: Damaged (SST):: Although the B side drags more painfully than I bet was intended, this is powerful stuff. Greg Ginn is the greatest noise guitarist since Johnny Thunders, new, vocalist Henry Rollins can snarl along any tortured contour they serve up, andRise Above,Six Pack, and the uproariousTV Party prove they can write songs as well as gnash fragments.

Bruce Cockburn Unchains Canada

Jim Feldman

NEW YORK—If quality will out and the cream rises to the top, then the U.S. of A. is seriously out of step—blindfolded andear-muffed—in not according Bruce Cockburn the same degree of commercial success he has achieved in his native Canada for more than a decade.

TED NUGENT A FRUIT?

"Should a gentleman offer a lady some fruit? ponders Ted Nugent, who spends much time wondering about questions occasionally even deeper! "Look, man, you think I got nothing better to do with my time than hold a fruitbowl in front of me? I got places to go, people to see, bananas to eat !!"

ATTACK OF THE BRAIN SUCKERS!!

THE JAGUAR AND THE THUNDERBIRD

Fast cars and fast women: that's where rock n roll started and that is where it remains today. The very phraserock n roll is a description of how automobiles sway from side to side as they go screaming down the highway. From Chuck Berrys many songs about cars (˜Maybelline,The Jaguar And The Thunderbird,You Cant Catch Me,No Money Down) to the Beach Boys ("Little Deuce Coupe,Fun, Fun, Fun,Shut Down,") to Bruce Springsteen ("Thunder Road, "Born To Run,Cadillac Ranch,Stolen Car,Drive All Night,The Wreck On The Highway) the automobile and the escape it offers are inextricably woven into the fabric of rock n roll songs, names of groups, and the real-life escapades and tragedies of the people who wrote and sang hit after hit across the last three decades.

WILLY DEVILLE WANTS TO DREAM

John Neilson

So what else is new? Hes certainly not the only rock n roller to fit that description. Bruce Springsteen has his vision of an America that lies midway between James Dean and Norman Rockwell, full of big cats and little gurlies, where any kid with a good heart and a fast guitar can earn a one way ticket to the Promised Land.

Thank you, Canada!

FUN WITH BOB & DOUG!

Susan Whitall

One vital reason for me to be in Toronto; recording artists Bob and Doug.

THE ONE AND ONLY COMBINED NRBQ

Dave DiMartino

Years ago, say 1968 or so, I was a snivelling adolescent who stole off outside the house to smoke Tareyton cigarettes. I often did shameful things. Sometimes, I would tell my parents I was going somewhere I wasnt. Many times I would sneak off to the movies with a friend— exceptthe movies were one of two Miami clubs, The World or Thee Image — to see bands like Cream, Country Joe & The Fish, the Mothers and Ultimate Spinach.

More Of An Outlaw Than You Ever Were?

Richard Riegel

Hiya from Cincinnati, Bob. Not that I really expected any special interview dispensations from your Dylanness, after all, not when youve made yourself inaccessible to much more powerful journalists than me, for more years than Ive even been writing.

Boy Howdy’s Ten Worst Movies Of 1981

Edouard Dauphin

Prime Time

Richard C. Walls

Mon. The Rolling Stones are in the Detroit area today and tomorrow and the local media coverage has been unprecedented...phenomenal ... weird. True, the Stones have been around long enough to earn the attention of the establishment newspeople, and the Detroit Free Press special Stones section was semi-knowledgeable, quoting CREEM alumni Dave Marsh and Lester Bangs (and calling Its Only Rock n Roll a greatest hits album)...but the local TV stations, with their awed predictions of crowd sizes and their breathless live coverage of the early arrivals, seem to be hoping for a little post-Cincinnati scoop...not an actual tragedy, of course, just a little violence or maybe some colorful arrests...

CONFESSIONS FILM FOX

He Walks In B-B-Beauty: This may be one of those John Travolta / Jim Morrison type rumors, but Barry Gibb is supposedly set to play Lord Byron in a movie version of the recent hit West End play based on the life of the naughty Romantic poet. We suppose for the obligatory "bi" scenes, Barry could warble some falsetto...No truth to the rumor that Robin Gibb is to play James Dickey in a made-for-TV movie...

NODS AND WINKS REVIVE DEAD HORSE

Laura Fissinger

Maybe the best album Stewarts done for Warners.

SOUPMUSIC FOR ANTPEOPLE

ROCK A RAMA

MEDIUM MEDIUM-The Glitterhouse (Cherry Red/Cachalot) :: I cant improve on the bio on this one—the record company's "searing zen funk describes Medium Mediums music better than I could, in a month of Sunday crosswords. Another newer British band, inevitably enough, Medium Medium are altogether as piledriven as Killing Joke, but with far more texture and fun to their skin-shredding, hyperfunk rhythms.
