INTRODUCTION

Who would have ever thought that the Police would rise from the late 70's British "punk" rock explosion to become one of the world's most popular rock bands? The first time a lot of Americans heard of the boys, they had no record, yet they were touring the U.S.A. in a van, playing shows night after night and promoting themselves.

LOOKING BACK ON LEBLANC GENERATION

The Police could’ve easily been voted Least Likely To Do Much Of Anything when they were formed in 1977. The poppin’-fresh Punk Movement was dominating the Britscene like nothing had since the Have Mersey scene of John, Paul, et. al. The Sex Pistols were the talk of the isle (as in: "Isle bet they never last”) and punk credentials were important.
Outlaws D'Amour The Police Raid Airwave Syndicate

The Police are not punk. The Police are not disco. The Police are not heavy metal. The Police are not power pop. The Police are the best rock ’n’ roll band I’ve seen in years. I kid you not. The group was formed by American drummer Stewart Copeland in January 1977 as much out of disenchantment with the old as infatuation with the new.
POLICE REPORT: MESSAGE FROM THREE BOTTLE BLONDS
Susan Whitall
JANUARY 1979: We started receiving phone calls here at B.H. Central of some urgency from John Pidgeon, one of our English writers who also toils for Melody Maker. Normally a subdued Britisher, John was extremely excited about this new band, the Police.

INTERROGATING THE POLICE
J. Kordosh_
'Twas the day before Christmas and like a lot of good Americans I was watching All My Children as part of my holiday bonus. (Hey, gotta keep up on what the pretend people are doing, too.) Anyway, the Martins were decorating the tree and Tad— who’s about 15 or so—had locked himself in his room, depressed because his girl had broken off with him.
RECORDS: THE POLICE
One thing’s for certain: the Police sure have funny album titles.
THE POLICE: POSTCARDS FROM MONTSERRAT
On the tiny island of Montserrat (33 square miles), the Police recently lolled in the sun, drank tropical drinks, and painfully re-examined their roots. Hard work, you bet. It's our great good fortune that the hard-working trio dropped these pix in the mail.
POLICE BLOTTERS
J. Kordosh
Do rock interviews ever turn deadly dull? On a red light with no hesitation, pal. Do musicians say things they might later regret? Sure, but only when they’ve gone broke. Do writers love to take quotes out of context and twist them to their own incurable purpose?
DEMOLITION MEN IN THE MACHINE: EVERY THING THE POLICE DO IS MAGIC!
Chris Salewicz
I visit Police guitarist Andy Summers early one Monday evening at the mansion flat in Putney in Southwest London in which he has lived since the mid-70's. Two days later he is set to move down the road into the grand Victorian house he has bought, a visible manifestation of the change in lifestyle the Police has brought him.
CONCLUSION
The Editors
Where next for these guys? From the smallest of beinnings to the largest of world tours, the Police have made their way to every corner of the world. As bossman Sting has it, every little thing they do is magic. From singing about inflatable dolls to world hunger, the band has covered relevant topics and then some.
