MICHAEL HUTCHENCE

AS IT DEVELOPS!

As we coyly hinted last month, the A-Ha invasion—well, it’s really more like a tour—is indeed a-comin’. Naturally, we’re as excited as you are, so—in celebration—we’ve got an exclusive interview with the terrific trio, in which they discuss this, their firstever tour...look for it on page 18.

HOWARD JONES

THE OUTSPOKER HOWARD JONES!

"I did pretty well in school," Howard Jones says, “because my parents really pushed me. Until I was about 14...then I just lost interest; I became a bit of a rebel school and I just didn’t see point.” The articulate Jones, a softspoken, even shy man, doesn’t seem to be your typical highschool rebel.

QUIDNUNC'S CONFIDENTIAL!

Michael Logan

Yiogos Panayiotou may be Greek to you and Greek to me but it also happens to be the real name of George Michael! Heretofore, little has been acknowledged about the ex-Whamer’s early life in Cyprus but now that the secret is out, his Greek restaurant-owning father has also reportedly admitted that Sir George was secretly married at the tender age of 16 to a young Greek maiden!

KATRINA MAKES WAVES

Katrina & The Waves made a big splash last year with their top-selling selftitled debut LP and hit single “Walking On Sunshine.” Up until then, not many people in America had even heard of the band, but the uptempo “happy” song helped establish Katrina alongside other female superstars like Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks and Madonna.

ROBERT PALMER Likes It Hot!

If you’re one of those people who’s been thinking that Robert Palmer is a guy who recenty burst onto the rock music charts with the hit singles "Addicted To Love" and "Some Like It Hot" you're totally wrong. That’s right, Robert Palmer has been making music for quite some time—almost 20 years!

BRIT BUZZ

Sylvie Simmons

Belgians? Who needs them?! Not content with being just across the road from England and speaking something that sounds like A-Ha’s aged grandparents choking on a goldfish, they have to go and come between Simon Le Bon and True Glory. Simon steered his muchdented dinghy Drum over the finish line in the latest leg of the Around The World Yacht Race after 30 days at sea and would have finished first, only those unnecesary Belgians just tipped him to the post! Still, Simon said he was pretty pleased—before running for the hills with Yasmin, whom he hadn’t seen since flying back home a month ago to do a Duran Duran video—and reckons he might make the top three overall.

PHIL COLLINS KWIK KWOTES!

Since 1971, Phil Collins has been the drummer for Genes the popular art-rock group from England. But, of cours Collins has since established himself as one of the bigges solo stars in pop music: albu like Hello, I Must Be Going, Face Value and—most recen and most successfully, No Jacket Required—have made him a household word and perennial Grammy contende.

A-HA IS READY FOR THE WORLD! IS THE WORLD READY FOR THEM?

Sylvie Simmons

Outside in the rain there’s a couple of dripping London bobbies gaping at a couple of hundred teenage girls who look like they’ve been put through the rinse cycle once too often, and scream like David Lee Roth sings every time a face appears at the window!

THE OMD CRUSH

First of all, OMD stands for Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark. Got that? Good. Because from this point on, ROCK-SHOTS is going to call them OMD. If only to save space, you know? Secondly, OMD are a British band that’s making all sorts of big noise in the States these days, thanks to their simply brilliant track from the Pretty In Pink film, “If You Leave.”

THE ROCK-SHOTS INTERVIEW: ANDY KING OF THE HOOTERS ON FAME FORTUNE & FIVE YEARS FROM NOW

Jackie Kallen

First of all, Andy, how did you guys ever get the name the Hooters? Well, Jackie, it’s kind of a backwards story. The band was in the studio doing some demo tapes, before we even had a name, and we were using the Hooter Melodica, which is a small instrument that has become our logo.

Madonna AT CLOSE RANGE

Sometimes it’s hard to figure out whether Madonna is a rock ’n’ roll star or a movie star! Of course, the lovely Ms. Ciccone made her mark as a song and dance bird—but it wasn’t long before she was appearing in Vision Quest, and then really realizing her acting dreams in the very popular Desperately Seeking Susan.

SHOTS IN THE DARK

Who’s in the dark this month? Why, everyone pictured in this inimitable section! As you’ll see, these many superstars were actually forced to wear sunglasses against their will! How could it happen? Will it happen again next month? Did we just make up the whole thing??

VAL KILMER ROCK-SHOTS

Mr. Misten Talk Talk!

Sylvie Simmons

Imagine Hall & Oates and the Police getting together at Toto’s place for a singsong and getting gatecrashed by Don Henley. Take half the age you first thought of, add Sting’s hat size, and what have you got? Lord knows, but it might look or sound a bit like Mr. Mister.

YOU'RE A Winner WITH ROCK-SHOTS

We've all dreamed of winning a contest, haven’t we? All of us would love to win a yacht, or perhaps even a lottery worth millions of dollars in cash. We at ROCK-SHOTS realize that winning contests is a thrill-of-a-lifetime—and that’s why we run contests each and every month!

ROGER TAYLOR TO LEAVE DURAN'S FANS' STUNNED!

OH NO—CAN IT BE? Yes, we’re afraid so! Sad to say, it looks like the fabbest band of this or any other decade, Duran Duran, won’t ever be the same again! Why? Well, just because! And also because Duran drummer extraordinaire, Roger Taylor, has decided to call it quits!

THE NEW BILLY IDOL

If it seems we were talking about Billy Idol’s third album, Whiplash Smile, months ago...well, we were. Just like everyone else. And—just like everyone else—we wonder why it took so long to finish. "Everybody bothers you to death about when’s your record coming out?’”

PSYCHEDELIC FURS KWIK KWOTES!

The Psychedelic Furs have been providing the world with their unique brand of music and imagery since the heyday of British punk. The band merged the “punk” influences of the time with music from the “glitter” rock era (Bowie, Roxy Music, etc.) and ’60s psychedelic sounds— taking their name to offend stubborn, dogmatic punks who wouldn’t admit they like anything from the ’60s.

RICHARD BUTLER

STING ROCK-SHOTS

STING BACK TO THE POLICE?

It seems that Gordon Sumner’s face and voice has been everywhere during the last year. “Gordon who?” you may ask. Most people know him best as Sting, the songwriter, lead singer and bass player who took his band, the Police, to international superstardom and making them one of the most successful trios in the entire history of rock ’n’ roll music.

the PET SHOP'S OPEN THE BOYS WILL BE WITH YOU IN A MINUTE

What’s your pick for Best New Band Of 1986? It may be too soon to tell, but at this point in time, ROCK-SHOTS is betting that England’s wonderful Pet Shop Boys are the choice of most. Who are the Pet Shop Boys? Two young men, actually. One’s named Neil Tennant, the other is Chris Lowe.
